All air conditioners contain "hazardous" materials which include refrigerant gases, oil from compressors, PCB's and or mercury from electronics, etc.
The Environmental Protection Agency has strict guidelines for the lawful disposal of these appliances.
Rooftop units that are properly recycled at a licensed facility will:
- have serial numbers recorded when received
- refrigerant removed and recycled
- compressor oil drained and recycled
- electronics removed and recycled
- plastics and metals recycled
- include letter of custody relieving equipment owner of future liability
